ETV Win continues its streak of weekly short-film releases under the Katha Sudha banner, and this week’s addition, “Kareemulla Biryani Point,” is a charmingly simple, feel-good adventure anchored by three seasoned actors. With an easy pace and a grounded narrative, the film offers a slice of life sprinkled with humour, nostalgia, and understated emotion.
Story…
Govind (Kancherapalem Raju), determined to give his ailing beloved Mary a memorable birthday treat, decides to fulfil her long-held desire: tasting the legendary biryani from the 50-year-old Kareemulla Biryani Point located in the village of Nuthakki. Short on funds, Govind teams up with his close friends Subhani (Shivannarayana) and Eman (Kedar Shankar), embarking on a small but eventful mission to gather the money.
The film follows their quirky attempts, unexpected hurdles and the emotional purpose driving their journey. Whether Govind ultimately succeeds in bringing joy to Mary forms the emotional core of this short and sweet narrative.
The film’s biggest strength is its freshness and honesty. Much like the storytelling styles of Tharun Bhascker or Vivek Athreya, director Prabhu Chand leans heavily on naturalism—simple situations, relatable characters, and a conversational sense of humour.
The chemistry between the three veteran actors is delightful.
Shivannarayana and Kedar Shankar deliver standout comedic moments.
Kancherapalem Raju brings quiet sincerity to his role, portraying Govind’s emotional resolve with measured authenticity.
The film’s tone is warm, unpretentious, and charming. The portrayal of three senior friends indulging in youthful mischief and mild adventure adds a nostalgic flavour. The emotional beats, though subtle, land effectively.
Technically, the film is solid.
Music by Aditya BN adds a refreshing touch with a vibe reminiscent of Vivek Sagar’s indie sensibilities.
Cinematography captures the rural outdoors with clarity and natural appeal.
Production values are commendable for a short film.
The primary drawback is the sluggish pace. Despite the narrative being inherently simple, the screenplay drags at places and could have benefited from sharper, more energetic editing.
Certain logical gaps feel noticeable especially in scenes involving the friends’ hunt for money, where a more plausible setup could have strengthened the story. Additionally, Govind’s romantic track with Mary feels slightly underdeveloped; a more fleshed-out emotional payoff could have enhanced the ending significantly.
Technical Departments…
Editing: While clean, it needed more tightness to maintain rhythm.
Music: Fresh, flavourful, and perfectly suited to the film’s tone.
Cinematography: Effective use of natural outdoor spaces brings authenticity.
Direction: Prabhu Chand shows good control over character development and tone. His inclusion of three friends from three religions is subtly handled and lends thematic depth.
Verdict…
“Kareemulla Biryani Point” is a pleasant, decently crafted fun adventure driven by warmth, humour, and honest performances. Though the pacing issues hold it back from being fully engaging, the film still makes for a satisfying, feel-good watch particularly for fans of naturalistic storytelling.
