Andhra Pradesh: In a shocking case of alleged medical negligence, a pregnant woman lost her unborn child and is now battling for her life after receiving treatment at a government hospital in Kakinada district.
The victim, Vara Lakshmi (33), a resident of Vellachintalagudem village in Gopalapuram mandal, was in her second pregnancy. On Wednesday, as she approached her due date, her family rushed her to the Gopalapuram Community Health Centre for delivery.
According to sources, the attending doctors administered anesthesia in preparation for the delivery. Soon after, Lakshmi reportedly slipped into an unconscious state. Her condition rapidly deteriorated, prompting an emergency referral to the Government General Hospital in Rajamahendravaram.
However, by the time she was admitted, doctors confirmed that the baby had already died in the womb. They added that the mother’s condition was also critical.
Speaking to the media, hospital officials stated, “The patient was brought to us in a severely critical condition. It was too late to save the baby. Despite our efforts, we are unsure about the mother’s recovery.”
This tragic incident has sparked outrage in the local community, raising serious questions about the quality of maternal care and timely intervention at rural government healthcare facilities. Family members allege that the delay and negligence at the Gopalapuram health centre led to the tragedy.
Local health authorities are yet to respond officially, but public demand is growing for a thorough investigation and accountability for the lapse in care.
